The Evoke2011 featured some really interesting animation-contributions, that I just want to highlight at this place.

The Evoke2011 is done and it was once again really much fun! There were lots of wild-compo contributions and the party itself with greate music by DJ Storno and others worth highlighting. Here are some of the demo-contributions:

Petri Purho, known to the most people as Klooniegames for his quite successful game Crayon Physics Deluxe (this is also part of the Humble IndieGame Bundle 3 by the way), held a talk at the Assembly 2011. He talks about why “being poor or having no budget is good for making games”. It is about making decisions based upon limitation and how this pushes being creative on the subject of innovation.
The Assembly 2011 Summer is taking place right at the moment. But the compo-entries already available on YouTube. Thanks to the internet! Dark palettes seem to dominate this years entries.
Here are just some works that look great. Watch more at the AssemblyTV-YouTube channel.

Just in case that you missed this app: don’t miss this app! It’s the newest artistic approach from Björk, who decided to walk new ways once again. Not only musical, but also in the format of choice: The new album “Biophilia” comes as a whole iOS app (so iPhone, iPod and iPad). It tells a story about the universe, the creation of it and is very strange and unique. The app itself is something like a 3d-browsable small universe, where you can visit stars and planets that represent the single tracks from the album.
But there is more to it! Every track has lots of information like lyrics, background text, a visual music score with lyrics (!) and also a music score of each single track to play along (!!). On top, there will be a special-made mini-game or interactive animation for each single track. The app comes with one initial track for free. All other tracks will be available by in-app purchases. There is the option to pre-order all tracks and mini-games for 7.99 Euro as in-app purchase.
The Quote-Unquote blog features interviews with indie-game-developers – almost a must read for everyone. Much of things to learn and explore. For example Adam Atomic says about the polishing of games something, that I think is really well said:
“If prototyping is the process of experiments and accidents and exploration, then polishing is the process of analyzing whether each of those experiments or accidents helped or hindered this particular game. We can visualize a prototype as a 2D sine wave. The crests are areas of the game that stick out in a bad way, that need to be sanded down or chopped off entirely. The troughs are areas of the game that are incomplete or under-explored, and need to be filled in with interesting things. The end result is that instead of a wobbly sine wave, we have a nice smooth surface.”
